Germany is roughly the size of Montana with an area of 356,959 square kilometers. It is the sixth largest country in Europe. At its widest, Germany measures approximately 650 kilometers from the Belgian-German border in the west to the Polish frontier in the east. The capital city is Berlin and the official language is German.

Germany has a temperate and marine climate with cool, cloudy, and wet winters and summers.

Religious classification in Germany are as Protestants (34%), Roman Catholics (34%), Muslims (3.7%) and unaffiliated or other (28.3%).

Germany’s struggle for war and the consequent World War has left an permanent mark on world history. With the defeat in World War II, Germany was occupied by the allied forces of UK, USA, France and the Soviet Union. The Cold War made Germany divided into the western Federal Republic of Germany and the eastern German Democratic Republic. The decline of the Soviet Union and the end of the cold war paved way for the unification of the nation in 1990.

Germany is the largest economy of Europe and the third largest in the world. It is ranked fifth in terms of purchasing power parity. Germany’s exports are one of the main reasons for its wealth and basically include engineering goods like automobiles, machinery and chemical goods.

The average cost of living in Germany is relatively high. The cost also depends on the city. Shopping is comparatively cheaper in Germany than in UK. This makes the German capital, along with London, Paris and Rome, one of the most visited metropolises in Europe.

Berlin covers an area of some 890 square kilometres. So it is nine times bigger than Paris. Berlin, the capital of Germany and one of the most influential centers of the European Union. It also has the distinction of being the biggest city in German, and the second biggest in the whole European Union according to the amount of its inhabitants.

Berlin was several times capital of different German nations: County of Brandenburg, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, German Democratic Republic and also of today’s Germany.

The city "Coelln", which was part of the double city "Berlin-Coelln", was mentioned in a document the first time in 1237. Berlin was mentioned the first time in 1244, which was located on the Northern bank of the Spree river. Both city received a common city hall in 1307. The name "Berlin" has nothing to do with the bear in the city crest. It's supposed the name "Berlin" comes from the Slavic syllable "Berl", which means "swamp".

Cologne is located in the western part of Germany and has a mild and pleasant climate. This city of approximately 986,000 inhabitants is more than 2030 years old, making it one of the oldest cities in the country. Today, it is a busy commercial centre, yet it has managed to well preserve its culture and heritage.

Frankfurt is located in the south-western part of Germany and has a population of approximately 648,000 inhabitants. It sees extreme variations within each season. As the seat of the European Central Bank and other major German commercial banks, it is the financial centre of the country.

Baden-Baden is a town located on the Oos River in the foothills of the Black Forest,in the region of Karlsruhe in south-west Germany. This small picturesque town, population 54,000, with its superb belle époque architecture nestles acres of graceful parkland.

Dresden is located in a valley in eastern Germany, along the river Elbe and has a primarily continental climate. This town of approximately 500,000 inhabitants is one of Germany’s largest metropolitan areas and a thriving centre, both culturally as well as financially.

Düsseldorf, in the western part of Germany, is one of the wealthiest cities in the country. This city of approximately 581,000 inhabitants is divided into two by the River Rhine the old, medieval town and the new commercial hub. Düsseldorf has a typically coastal climate largely influenced by its nearness to the Atlantic Ocean

The municipal boundary of Germany extends for 234 kilometres. The German capital consists today of 12 independently administered municipal districts, each of city size and status in its own right. The demolition of the Wall on 9 November 1989 marked the dawn of a new era for Berlin - an era in which the most significant elements have been the reunification of Germany in 1990. The Berlin Wall earned the city a sorry reputation around the world for almost 30 years. Berlin has long since emerged from the shadow of the Wall, however. More than 14 years after it came down, the city, subsequently regarded as the "workshop of unity", has reinvented itself. It is now associated with top-class architecture, modernity and a fast pace of life.

Schoenefeld International Airport, Frankfurt International Airport, Franz Josef Strauss Munich International Airport are among the main airports in Germany

The growing medical expenses and expensive treatments are attracting people all over the world to look out for such places, where they can treat their health hazards and regain their good humor. Medical Tourism is not a new phenomenon and it has become quite popular among the patients to search for better and affordable medical facilities abroad. Those who are not aware about the term, must know that Medical tourism is a kind of venture, where the patients leave his own country and go to any foreign country with the hope of getting better medical aid. As Germany is one of the major world powers, it has been able to utilize its economic strength and have led to the prosperity of Medical Tourism in Germany.

The advanced medical equipments and world class doctors and surgeons have ensured the patients to have excellent treatment in Germany. The countries of North Africa and the Middle East were the pioneers in practicing medical tourism. There are various agencies in and out of Germany which put diligent effort in offering effective patient transfer service from all corners of the world to Germany. While you plan to go for Medical Tourism in Germany make sure that you are contacting the right organization. Owing to the quality and extensive network of medical consultants, the patients are falling back on their service. Gone are those fays when only the celebrities and other famous personalities used to visit the spas and clinics in Switzerland and other countries for medical treatment.

    Music

Germany's classical music tradition is one of its greatest sources of pride. This is the country that produced Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Handel and Wagner, amongst others. That's not to say that the musical menu is all Valkyries and vespers. The seminal German band Kraftwerk practically invented electronic music, and Berlin is known for its flourishing techno scene. Of course, being Germany, the darker genres of thrash, industrial and metal are also popular.

    Fine arts

Germany has been endowed with many exceptional visual artists. The Gothic sculpture of Peter Vischer and his sons, the renaissance portraiture of Albrecht Dürer and the baroque architecture of Balthasar Neumann are all magnificent examples in their fields. In more recent times, Max Ernst's surreal concoctions, Helmut Newton's controversial photographs and Joseph Beuys' eccentric installations have reflected the German love of riding the cutting edge. Germany's museums and galleries are second to none.

    Religious tradition

The German government has limited responsibilities for culture, which is devolved to the states of Germany, called Länder.

64.1 percent of the German population belongs to Christian denominations. 31.4 percent are Roman Catholic, and 32.7 percent are affiliated with Protestantism (the figures are known accurately because Germany imposes a church tax on those who disclose a religious affiliation). The North and East is predominantly Protestant, the South and West rather Catholic. Nowadays there is a non-religious majority in Hamburg and the East German states. Germany formed a substantial part of the Roman Catholic Holy Roman Empire, but was also the source of Protestant reformers such as Martin Luther. Historically, Germany had a substantial Jewish population. Only a few thousand people of Jewish origin remained in Germany after the Holocaust, but the German Jewish community now has approximately 100,000 members, many from the former Soviet Union. Germany also has a substantial Muslim minority, most of whom are from Turkey.

German theologians include Luther, Melanchthon, Schleiermacher, Feuerbach, and Rudolf Otto. Also Germany brought up many mystics including Meister Eckhart, Rudolf Steiner, Jakob Boehme, and some popes (e.g. Benedict XVI).

    Food

Germany's artistic diet, rich though it is, has nothing on its food. This is traditionally a meat-and-  potatoes kind of country. Though vegetarian and health-conscious restaurants are starting to sprout, it might be best to stop counting calories and cholesterol levels while in Germany. The assault begins with a good German breakfast: rolls, jam, cheese, cold meats, hard-boiled egg and coffee or tea. To be fair, many Germans have switched to lighter breakfasts like cornflakes or muesli, but visitors are often served the traditional cut meat and jam. Lunch is the main meal of the day, but breakfast is so big you'd be forgiven for just picking up a midday bratwurst from the ubiquitous Imbiss (takeaway-food stand). Dinner is allegedly a lighter meal, but this can still mean a plate full of sausages and dumplings. (Light eaters may want to opt for international cuisine from Germany's immigrant communities.) Beer, the national beverage, is excellent and relatively cheap. Each region and brewery produces beer with a distinctive taste and body. Impromptu visits to small breweries are better than adding your bulk to the already overcrowded festivals like Munich's Oktoberfest. In winter, you can experience the glorious haze induced by Glühwein, a hot, spicy mulled wine guaranteed to take the chill away.

    Behaviour

Despite their penchant for continual improvement and modernisation, upholding cultural traditions is dear to the German heart. Many hunters still wear green, master chimney sweeps get around in pitch-black suits and top hats, some Bavarian women don the Dirndl (skirt and blouse), while their menfolk occasionally find suitable occasions to wear typical Bavarian Lederhosen (leather shorts), a Loden (short jacket) and felt hat. In everyday life, Germans are fairly formal, although more so in the Protestant-dominated north than the beer-swilling south. In eastern Germany many older people are relatively unused to tourists, so it's best to err towards deference. Except with very close friends, older Germans still use Herr and Frau in daily discussion. The transition from the formal Sie address to the informal du is generally mutually agreed and sealed with a toast and a handshake. You don't have to worry so much with people under about 40; in fact, exaggerated politeness will probably be laughed off as beginner's Deutsch.

Germany has numerous cities of interest to tourists; these are some famous travel destinations:

Berlin the reunified and reinvigorated capital of Germany; known for its division during the Cold War — and the Berlin Wall. Today its a metropolis of diversity with elegant clubs, galleries and traditional restaurants. It is also a haven for shoppers.

Bremen - One of the most important cities in northern Germany, its old town will be of interest to travellers who want a slice of history.

Cologne (Köln) Germany's fourth-largest city. Cologne was founded by the Romans and is 2000 years old with its huge cathedral, Romanesque churches, and archaeological sites. Cologne also well known for its carnival and its Christopher-Street-Day parade. Don't forget to try the local cuisine and of course the local beer, called "Kölsch".

Dresden - Once called 'Florence on the Elbe', and world-famous for its Frauenkirche and historic center which was destroyed during the war, the city offers more than what the average traveller can expect: Great festivals, all kinds of cultural entertainment, vibrant night life, and surrounded by beautiful natural vistas. Dresden hosts the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections) which is one of the world's most impressive museums and collections. The art collections consist of eleven museums, of which the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister and the Grünes Gewölbe are the most well-known.

Dusseldorf (Düsseldorf, Duesseldorf) Germany's capital of fashion, the capital city of North Rhine-Westphalia offers a wide scale of fascinating new architecture. Right along the shores of river Rhine, the "Altstadt" and the "Medienhafen" are among the best places in Germany to enjoy a vibrant nightlife. Being one of the country's wealthiest cities, the atmosphere is very pleasant. Germans call it "the only metropolis ending with -dorf (German for village)".

Frankfurt Germany's leading financial center, transportation hub, seat of the European Central Bank (ECB), international trade fair center (Book Fair, Motor Show), hub of multicultural activity (30% Immigrants), and site of numerous world-class museums and theaters. It is also Germany's only city with enough skyscrapers to have a skyline.

Hamburg Germany's second-largest city, famous for its harbour as well as its liberal and tolerant culture. Don't miss the Reeperbahn with its night clubs and casinos. Hamburg is also popular for its many musicals.

Hannover - One of Germany's newer "tourist cities", having hosted various international events in recent times.

Munich (München) Bavaria's beautiful capital city and Southern Germany's primate city. Third largest city in Germany, Munich is the site of the famous Oktoberfest and the gateway to the Alps.

Nuremberg (Nürnberg) Second largest city in Bavaria, after WW2 over 90% of the old-town was destroyed. Today it has already been reconstructed, including the Gothic Kaiserburg Castle (Emperor's Castle of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation). You can also visit the Nazi party rally grounds, the Documentation Centre and Courtroom 600 - venue of the Nuremberg Trails.

    By plane

The most important airports are Frankfurt (IATA: FRA), Munich (IATA: MUC) and Düsseldorf (IATA: DUS). Berlin Schönefield Airport (IATA: SXF) and Tegel Airport (IATA: TXL), Cologne (IATA: CGN) and Hamburg (IATA: HAM) have some international flights as well.

Frankfurt is Germany's main hub and one of Europe's four major hubs, and the destination of most intercontinental flights. Munich is a secondary hub. Travellers can easily fly in from most places of the world and then connect with Germany's biggest and most respected airline Lufthansa [3] which is a member of the Star Alliance.

    By train

Regular train services connect Germany with all neighbouring countries. Almost all neighbouring countries (especially Switzerland, Poland, Denmark, Czech Republic and Austria) and even some non-neighbouring countries (e. g. Italy) are quite well connected with "EuroCity" trains. They are a little bit slower than the European high speed trains but reach nevertheless up to 200 km/h. They are a worthwhile way to travel--not only for budget travellers (although budget airlines might be cheaper) or landscape viewers (especially the Rhine valley lines).

    By Boat

International ferry services exist, notably to Scandinavia. Some of the most popular connections are listed below:

    • Lübeck and Sassnitz are connected to Kaliningrad, Saint Petersburg, Russia. Sassnitz is also connected to Riga, Latvia and Trelleborg, Sweden.
    • Kiel has connections to Gothenburg, Sweden, Klaipeda, Lithuania and Oslo, Norway.
